“Tadaa drashtuh svaroope vasthaanam”

In the moment when the mind becomes still, the Bliss of your own being pours forth

-Patanjali Yoga Sutras 1:3

Svaroopa® yoga was developed by Rama Berch. It is rooted in traditional Hatha yoga, using variations of poses to create profound and reliable physical release. This inner opening leads to a quieting of the mind and an experience of the inner realms of consciousness, creating transformation from the inside out.

It All Begins at the Tailbone:

In Svaroopa® yoga we start at the base of the spine, sequencing the poses to release the core tensions in the muscles around the tailbone, then the sacrum, up through the waist, and into and through the spine behind the ribcage. Over time, the tensions of our daily lives have reshaped and misaligned the body.  Sometimes the deep muscles have been tight for so long that they are numb. We deliberately reach into those tight spots by gently holding the body in each sequenced pose. As the muscles begin to release, there is a safe and gradual readjustment that takes place all the way through the body. Even the mind begins to ease.

Support Equals Release:

Svaroopa® yoga meets each body on its own terms.  There is no need to push or to pull into the “perfect” pose. In fact, letting go of effort and allowing the body to settle into the support of blankets, blocks, or the bones of the body, creates even deeper opening. In Svaroopa®  yoga we experience how the body can support itself in its natural alignment.  We learn to lean weight into the arm bones, leg bones, and sitbones, which has the double benefit of releasing the muscles and strengthening the bones. We also learn to use the muscles of the arms, legs, and abdominals more efficiently so that the spine does not need to do all of the work.
